BUILDING AN AWARD WINNING WATER FEATURE Because of our experience in building both pools and natural water features we can combine the best of both worlds to give you a care-free very low maintenance water feature. 1. All of our ponds have skimmers to skim off the detritus that falls into the pond. If this material is allowed to sink to the bottom it decomposes and becomes nutrient for algae growth. 2. The beautiful waterfalls that are a hallmark of a Lucas Lagoon actually provide some very beneficial effects for the pond water. The water is continuously being re-oxygenated. Algae do not thrive in an oxygen rich environment. Because we use several pumps to create the natural looking waterfalls, some of the water is drawn through a skimmer (see above), while other water is drawn from the bottom of the pond. Carbon dioxide, a result to natural decay, collects at the bottom. Algae need carbon dioxide to thrive. By drawing water from the bottom the carbon dioxide is dissipated and the water is re-oxygenated as it passes down the falls. 3. The pond bottom is covered with sand, a natural medium for the production of beneficial bacteria. Beneficial bacteria provides a very important function in your pond. These bacteria feed on the same nutrients that algae does. When you increase the amount of beneficial (note that I’m saying “beneficial” ie; “good”) bacteria to your pond, you’re actually starving the algae and creating a clearer pond at the same time! Beneficial bacteria also provides many other functions: they eliminate pond odors, reduce oxygen demand, improve water clarity, eliminate excess nutrients and control algae. 4. One of the major causes of string algae in a pond is the existence of “dead areas” along the pond edge. We build returns along this area to make sure that water is flowing in all parts of the pond to almost completely eliminate this problem. 5. Another cause of algae is lots of sunlight. By planting the pond with water lilies we decrease the sunlight while increasing the natural beauty of the pond area. So you see, with a Lucas Lagoon, you do not have to sacrifice beauty for practicality. PRICES FOR A WATER FEATURE START AT $75,000.00 How Lucas Congdon Designs and Builds a Lagoon Pool Water Feature.
